Our Journey
Kashi Designs is an Australian brand dedicated to promote different handmade products from Colombia. These products are designed, created, and imported from Colombia. They are fabricated by indigenous Colombian group, named Wayuu who are inhabiting the Guajira Peninsula, which spans across North-Eastern Colombia and North-Western in Venezuela. They have a rich history and cultural heritage that predates the arrival of Europeans in the Americas.

History
The Wayuu are known for their resilience and ability to adapt to the harsh desert environment of the Guajira Peninsula. Traditionally, they have been semi-nomadic, relying on goat herding and fishing as primary sources of sustenance. Their society is organized into matrilineal clans, and they have a deep reverence for their ancestral lands.
Nowadays
The Wayuu continue to struggle for recognition of their land rights and cultural preservation. They face challenges such as poverty, limited access to education and healthcare, and the encroachment of modernity on their traditional way of life. Despite these challenges, the Wayuu maintain a strong sense of identity and pride in their cultural heritage, which is reflected in their language, art, and ceremonies. Efforts to empower indigenous communities and protect their rights are ongoing in Colombia and internationally. Wayuu artisans are renowned for their craftsmanship and produce a wide range of products that reflect their rich cultural heritage and traditional skills. Some of the most notable Wayuu artisan products include:

Wayuu Bags (Mochilas)
These iconic handwoven bags are perhaps the most famous of Wayuu artisan products. Mochilas are characterized by their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and sturdy construction. Each bag is meticulously crafted by skilled Wayuu women using a technique passed down through generations. They are highly sought after for their beauty and quality.

Jewellery
Wayuu artisans also create beautiful jewellery using techniques such as bead-work and macramé. Necklaces, bracelets, and earrings are adorned with traditional symbols and motifs, reflecting the cultural significance of these adornments within Wayuu society. These pieces are often handmade with care and attention to detail.

Clothing and Accessories
In addition to bags and jewellery, Wayuu artisans produce a variety of clothing and accessories, including scarves, belts, and hats. These items are often embellished with traditional designs and may incorporate techniques such as embroidery or weaving.
